20 WHAT IS TRUTH? mind. Jesus is authority for the statement that the Bible, which is God’s Word, is the truth. The Bible makes the plain statement concerning the church, and all who believe the Bible will be satisfied with its testimony. The word church literally means “a calling out”. A company. of people taken out from a larger body and set aside for a specific purpose may properly be defined as a church. The term is often applied to a body of people, which people may have no relationship whatsoever to the true church. Many organizations of men have been formed and which organizations are called by the name of ‘church’, but none of which form any part of the true church. No man has authority to determine what is the church and who are the members. That must be determined by the Word of God. The true church is composed of Christ Jesus and all others who are made like him. Jehovah God selects the church, and therefore the true ehurch is designated the church of God. The language employed in 1 Timothy 3:15 is, “The eburch of the living God.” In Hebrews 12: 23 the same company is designated the “church of the firstborn, which are written in heayen”. The true church, therefore, means the people of God taken out from amongst humanity and set aside for his purposes.
